Joseph LaVine became interested in Tui Na in 1993 while training in the Chinese martial arts where he consequently found the importance of treating soft tissue and bone injuries. In 1997, Joseph attended Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in California, becoming certified in Tui Na massage. In 1999, he further trained as an apprentice to Dr. Huan Xio Yuan, O.M.D., in Kunming, Yunnan China. In 2003, Joseph extended his clinical training in Traditional Chinese orthopedics and Tui Na at the teaching hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, in Sichuan, China. There he treated patients under the tutelage of the faculty, namely Dr. Wu Zuo Lian and Dr. Jiang Zhong Chao.
Since 2001, Joseph has maintained a private practice in Central Pennsylvania focusing on posttraumatic and sports injuries using Tui Na, herbal therapy, and Chi Kung. He has been invited to speak at various organizations on Tui Na bodywork topics and has volunteered his time to treat athletes of the Harrisburg Marathon, MS Bikathon, and the 2005 National Senior Olympics in Pittsburgh. Also an avid practitioner of Chinese wushu, with proficiency in Northern Shaolin, Joseph has taken lessons from Chinese martial arts teachers, including Sifu’s Chi Hung Mar, Kwong Wing Lam, and Wan Kei Ho in Hong Kong, as recently as 2006.
Tui Na is best suited for treating chronic pain, stress related disorders and traumatic conditions (sprain, contusion, fractures, joint and connective tissue diseases). Joseph’s training and experience is in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) orthopedics and traumatology. Because it tends to be more specific and intense than other types of bodywork, Tui Na may not be necessarily used to sedate or relax a patient. The type of massage delivered can be quite vigorous; in fact some people may feel sore after their first session.
