FAQ’S ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture originated in ancient China and is practiced today in almost every country. Your acupuncturist is trained to recognize hundreds of precise points at which energy blockages can occur. Slender pre-sterilized needles are then inserted to remove energetic obstructions. Acupuncture treats the entire person and their underlying imbalances which cause the problems, rather than only the symptoms. By influencing the Qi at these points, a practitioner encourages the body’s innate healing power to restore balance to result in improving a patient’s health and discourage future health problems.
Each patient represents a totally unique combination of influences and therefore, each treatment is individually tailored. In this way you are treated as an individual each time you visit. As indicated above, treatment now can prevent symptoms later. Over the last twenty years, acupuncture has become widely accepted in the United States and is endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
What conditions does an acupuncturist treat?
Please see our “Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture” link for a comprehensive explanation and list.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Every acupuncturist has a unique touch and needle techniques vary with an acupuncturist’s training. Most Susquehanna Acupuncture and Healing Arts Center patients report feelings of total relaxation, thought clarity, pain relief, a balanced sense of self, and even euphoria after their appointments. On occasion patients report mild discomfort with needle insertion, however, those sensations are a few seconds long at the most, and usually mean that acupuncture was particularly needed on that place on the body.
Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
Some companies do cover acupuncture, at least partially, and some do not. We recommend that you simply call your insurance carrier to inquire about coverage, and suggest coverage if they do not.
How soon can I expect results?
There is a direct correlation between the length and complexity of a condition and the path to improving your health. While patients usually experience deep relaxation and some relief after the first appointment, lasting relief will be built over several appointments.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear loose and comfortable clothing, such as a skirt or pants that can be pulled up past your knees, and sleeves that can be rolled up.
